Explicit Phonics
Our explicit phonics program teaches students to organize letter-sound relationships into a logical instructional sequence that is both fun and engaging. Beginning in jr. kindergarten, children learn all the sounds associated with each phonogram (written sound). By the end of Kindergarten, St. George students know all of the sounds for each of the 71 most frequently used phonograms.
Complimenting the Explicit Phonics program, our Accelerated Reading program refines comprehension via ongoing testing that allows both students and teachers to track and improve accuracy and also encourages independent, out-of-classroom reading.
Ms. Cathy Cummins, a recognized early reading expert and founder of the San Antonio Academy's Early Bird Phonics Program and reading instructor for over 36 years, commended St. George on our academic excellence:
