Core Studies
lower school
The St. George Lower School is traditional in nature, with instruction that is heavily focused on the basics of reading, math and writing. However, we are best known for our outstanding early literacy and reading program. St. George's proven success and reputation for reading excellence has been made possible thanks to our Explicit phonics approach and our dedicated staff of teachers who implement these strategies.
In addition to the basics in reading, math and writing, our other core studies include: social studies, science, spelling, and English grammar and literature. These core studies are complimented by 'hands-on' science labs, the Sunshine Math Program, PSIA competition, poetry contests, the science fair and other immersion programs.
Starting in fourth grade, core studies are divided among teachers who are subject matter experts in their fields. Math-Science, Reading-Spelling, and History-English are divided into specialty classes through which students rotate. In addition, the horizontal integration of curriculum between each subject area helps ensure students gain a thorough understanding of the material taught.
middle school
Our departmentalized instruction ensures that students receive a solid foundation in all core studies. Math, Science, History, and English Grammar and Literature are all taught by professionals who are passionate about their subject matter. Our Middle School Teachers combine formal education and life application experience to help students understand the 'how' and 'why' of each of the subjects taught. St. George families enjoy low student-teacher ratios, with a myriad of opportunities to communicate with teachers outside of class hours for additional assistance if necessary.
